Cultural Practice

Most the local residents are middle-aged or elderly who still follows traditional cultural practice. One Granny told me that people pay tribute to the nature and recieve its blessing and protection. I was fascinated by this reciprocal relationship.

"Bajiao Lou"

During occasions such as weddings, celebrations, raising beams for new houses, the birth of children, the passing of elders, or during festivals, the head of the household always visits the temple to pay respects to the Earth God. These rituals carry the people's hopes and aspirations for a better life.

The Earth Temple (土地庙) is central in Chinese folk religion and culture. It is dedicated to the Earth Gold, a deity responsible for overseeing the local land, fertility, and the well-being of its people. At its core, Chinese socity is agrarian where its rise and fall heavily links with environmental changes. The collapse of most dyansties coincides with a long period of famine.

The Earth Temple is usually small and simple, reflecting its function as a place for local people to offer sacrifices, pray for good harvests, prosperity, and protection from natural disasters. â€‹Bajiao Lou, which translates to “octagonal pavilion" serves a similar function as the earth temple. The symmetrical symbolizes balance and harmony.
